Energy Sustainability & ESG Expert

Tunbosun Afolayan is a Energy Sustainability & ESG expert with over 18 years experience across the natural (Oil & Gas, Water and Solid Minerals) resource management sectors, and the financial industry. She is the current publicity secretary of the Nigerian Association of Petroleum Explorationists (NAPE) and global co-chair of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG) Imperial Barrel Awards Competition.

A pioneer on many fronts, she is the first female chairperson of the NAPE University Assistance Program (2015/16), first AAPG Africa region Young professional lead (2010-2013), In 2021, she was recognised by the Akwa Ibom State University for her outstanding contributions to Nigeria University Assistance Programs. A 2022 honorary award recipient of the Rising Woman in Energy, 2019 AAPG distinguished service and 2016 NAPE young professional exemplary awards. and several staff recognition awards.

She sits on the executive team of Women in Geosciences & Engineering (WiGE), co-chaired the 2022 Sustainable Energy Development and Environmental Geoscience theme at the International Meeting for Applied Geoscience & Energy (IMAGE) Conference, a speaker at the 2022 Africa Energy Conference and on the board of AAPG Division of Professional Affairs.

As Publicity Secretary, NAPE has witnessed a complete turn-around in her members’ inclusion, strategic policy advocacy, internal & external stakeholders’ representation. She facilitated the NAPE Petroleum Industry Bill business session, Pre-conference workshop on Energy Transition, Society of Petroleum Engineers – Abuja Section Climate Change Mitigation panel, amidst several monthly business technical meetings. These events are high ranking policy shaping events with outcome communiques submitted to the Nigeria state for policy evaluation and inclusion.

She worked with Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company till 2021 for ~14years supporting several major onshore to deep-water projects. Her team was the front-end subsurface team for the Bonga South-West Aparo project, where she supported the development of the BSWA Technical procedures, Unitisation agreements and alignment with other co-venturers and Unit Partners, and in Unitisation & Equity Determination Subject Matter expertise. 

She publishes and speaks to solution-oriented design for Energy Sustainability, ESG & Equitable practices in major publications within Africa.
